Did you know?

On average, Americans spend 90 percent of their time indoors, yet the air inside our homes and offices can be ten times more polluted than outdoor air, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

A report in the New England Journal of Medicine states that 40 percent of children will develop respiratory disease, in part due to the chemicals in their homes.

Buildings consume 42 percent of the nation’s energy, produce 40 percent of our landfill waste, and create 40 percent of the emissions responsible for global climate change.

To achieve the Society’s desire to strengthen the world of interior design, the not-for-profit ASID Foundation was created to help address interior design education and some of the most crucial social and environmental issues of today’s global community.

The ASID Foundation and the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) are launching ReGreen, a program to develop sustainable practice guidelines and educational resources for existing homeowners and residential design professionals, suppliers and contractors.

More than 124,000 people visited the ASID Foundation-sponsored exhibition, The Green House: New Directions in Sustainable Architecture and Design at the National Building Museum in Washington, D.C. Plans are underway for it to travel to various cities throughout the United States.

The ASID Foundation has partnered with the Council for Interior Design Accreditation to support a major standards revision project. The project involves a comprehensive examination of the standards used to evaluate academic programs. Implementation of the new standards is planned for 2009.

Along with the scholarships and awards given to students and practicing designers to promote building a healthier and more diverse interior design community, the ASID Foundation is truly making a difference.
