Jules Verne fans take note: the hotel of the future may just be under water! The Poseidon Undersea Resort is a sci-fi fantasy being built by a company with 15 years of experience in manufacturing civil submarines. Scheduled to open in 2009, construction plans are under way to build the hotel, which will include 24 rooms, a library, a spa and a 100 seat restaurant and bar. The modular structure is being assembled above ground in Portland, before it is transported aboard a heavy lift ship and submerged in its final location in Fiji next to a coral reef on the sea floor 40 feet below the surface of a lagoon. At a price of $30,000 per week double occupancy (all inclusive) this intriguing project presents unique architectural and interior design challenges with the aim of giving customers an ultralux underwater experience of a lifetime.
